Openly Developing Open Infrastructure

As OpenStack turns 10 this year, the mission of the OpenStack Foundation has evolved, from solely supporting the production of OpenStack software, to more generally supporting the open development of open infrastructure solutions. In this talk, Thierry Carrez, VP of Engineering at the OpenStack Foundation, will look back at this transition. We'll explain what we mean by open development, and what we mean by open infrastructure.

Having said this, the majority of CEPH installations are powered by Broadcom connectivity solutions. The presentation will show the latest products Broadcom has released for the storage landscape and how the CEPH community can benefit from these.

Ceph Storage for Computing Infrastructure at CERN

The CERN laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland is the world's largest particle accelerator, collecting petabytes of data from high energy particle collisions to study the fundamental properties of nature. CERN's computing infrastructure is large and varied, but the central IT infrastructure has been built upon OpenStack and Ceph since 2013. Today, CERN IT operates around 20PB of Ceph clusters including block and NAS storage for our cloud, CephFS storage for HPC, and S3 for web applications and backups. The flexibililty and fault-tolerance of Ceph have made it a big success in our environment, and we will present the statistics, experiences, and in-house tooling used to operate our Ceph clusters.

Dell EMC Ready Architectures for Red Hat OpenStack Platform

Dell have been partners for 20 years with Red Hat and provide a jointly engineered, deeply integrated, and fully-validated OpenStack solution for private and hybrid cloud, optimized for Communications Service Providers and NFV applications. We also have dedicated and jointly staffed labs for OpenStack and open source development, testing, and performance engineering. The Dell EMC Ready Architecture for Red Hat OpenStack Platform is a reference architecture to help simplify and accelerate production deployments. With this reference architecture, Dell EMC delivers tested design guidance to help customers rapidly deploy Red Hat® OpenStack® Platform on Dell EMC infrastructure and minimizes engineering time needed to deploy NFV. The Dell EMC Ready Architecture for Red Hat OpenStack Platform validates open standards-based Dell EMC cloud infrastructure hardware (compute, networking) and Red Hat OpenStack Platform. The architecture also includes support for Dell EMC R640, R740, R740xd PowerEdge servers based on 2nd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors. The reference architecture is pre-validated with Red Hat OpenStack Platform software. By doing this validation, the solution helps customers minimize adoption time and significantly reduces time to service to deploy services on this NFV infrastructure.

Why is OpenStack technology still trending nowadays?

OpenStack is the advanced open source technology designed to allow you to easily deploy the tools you need, when you need them, how many resources you need, all from one place. Whether you choose to have a private cloud, Kubernetes or Containers environment, OpenStack can be leveraged as the Infrastructure-as-a-Service platform and offers to all the scientific facilities and enterprises, from small to the very large ones, the right technology to automate, scale and manage your cloud infrastructure, without a vendor lock-in system. The objective of this session is to speak about what’s possible to do with the innovative OpenStack, the scientific and enterprise workloads enabled by taking advantage of the capabilities of OpenStack, how does OpenStack enable agile, flexible and scalable infrastructure, to managing multiple cloud workloads successfully, optimizing data center energy consumption, dynamically reconfigurable environments. Stay close, we will touch on examples covering data analysis, machine learning, AI, and bioinformatics workloads.

Librmb: Billions of emails in Ceph

Most enterprise email systems use traditional local or distributed file systems like NFS to store data, indexes and caches. Software Defined Storage (SDS) such as Ceph has changed the storage market fundamentally in recent years and offers more options such as Object Store. Deutsche Telekom operates a growing email system with several million accounts and billions of emails stored on traditional NFS. Two years ago we introduced librmb (librados mailbox) to the community, a universal open source library used to store emails in a Ceph cluster. Librmb uses RADOS to store email directly in Ceph to achieve maximum performance through parallel access from many email gateways simultaneously, for millions of active customers. This presentation will cover the current project status and topics such as performance, data replication, data security and other optimizations that are necessary to run a multi-PByte email system.

Ceph on Windows!

We are thrilled to present the results of the porting of Ceph RADOS and RBD on Microsoft Windows, a community effort led by SUSE and Cloudbase Solutions. The goal consisted in porting librados and librdb on Windows Server, providing a kernel driver for exposing RBD devices natively as Windows volumes, support for Hyper-V VMs and last but not least, even CephFS. Through this work, Ceph becomes the only widely adopted cross platform Open Source distributed storage solution, allowing operators to deploy a cluster across heterogeneous operating systems and leveraging a unified distributed storage strategy on any commodity hardware. During this session we will talk about the architectural differences between Windows and Linux from a storage standpoint and how we retained the same CLI so that long time Ceph users will feel at home regardless of the underlying operating system. There will be no lack of live demos, including automating the installation of the Windows binaries, setting up and managing a Ceph cluster across Windows and Linux nodes and spinning up Hyper-V VMs from it.

Cloud Computing and Big Data Research Laboratory (B3LAB) Project is under the leadership of TÜBİTAK BİLGEM Information Technologies Institute (BTE) and with the support of the Investment Program of the Turkish Ministry of Development, basing on the needs of Turkey and the current developments around the world in Cloud Computing. The project aims to provide the necessary ground for the formation of infrastructure in Cloud Computing and Big Data.B3LAB is focused on research in Cloud Computing and Big Data, and aims to provide training and consultancy to the concerned institutions in these technologies. Regarding the facilities of B3LAB, the major one is a prototype data center which has the properties of Tier2+. On this Data Center , B3LAB has Safir Altyapi Cloud Environment which is based on OpenStack. B3LAB offers cloud computing solutions with flexible, highly available, scalable, and easy-to-manage infrastructure. Based on the Pike version of the OpenStack, Safir Altyapi can provide platform and software services as well as standard infrastructure services. B3LAB contributes to the development of open source OpenStack project. Customized services have been developed and integrated to the OpenStack according to the needs of public institutions. Safir Cloud includes the following Custom services: ▪ Users who want to use Safir Cloud can register to the system via Safir Cloud UI without resorting to any formal authority. ▪ With Safir Monitoring Service, both Safir Cloud system administrators and individual users can monitor the usage of related IT resources and take necessary actions according to usage trends. ▪ Safir Billing Service offers a credit-based billing solution to monitor system-wide resource utilization and ensures fair use. Usage information is presented to the users via e-mail periodically. ▪ Safir OpenStack Migration Service (O2O migrator) offers to facilitate the migration between different OpenStack versions and to accelerate the transition process. ▪ Safir VMware-OpenStack Migration Service enables automatic migration of virtual machine and block storage areas between different cloud infrastructures including VMWare and OpenStack. ▪ Safir DevOps solution of Cloud Computing and Big Data Research Laboratory (B3LAB) provides environments, services and tools required during the software development and operations processes on Safir Infrastructure to software development and operations teams by providing fast and trouble-free operation of DevOps in software projects. In our presentation, we are planning to present our OpenStack Environment which is called Safir Altyapi and share our experiences. An Upgrade Journey of a 68-petabyte OpenStack Swift Environment

One of the most popular digital services offered by Turkcell Lifebox is a personal cloud storage service where users can save their photos, videos, music and files. Users can reach their files by phone, tablet, or PC whenever they have internet access. This service is currently running on one of the world's largest OpenStack Swift implementations with more than 5 million users with a 68-petabyte capacity. In this session, we'll briefly explain how Turkcell: • Upgraded from Red Hat OpenStack Platform 5 to Red Hat OpenStack Platform 10. • Used Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform in the upgrade. • Overcame the challenges to realize cost savings and performance benefits.

NetGSM Infrastructure with Open Source Technologies

NETGSM is a company that fully works on open source technologies in Turkey. All of these systems, technological instruments and infrastructure used by NETGSM have been implemented with internal resources. NETGSM is also a fixed telecommunication operator and it has Research & Development Center Certificate since 2007. In absolute terms, NETGSM has now more than 110.000 subscribers, 70% of which are governmental institutions. NETGSM is continuing to plug away at related fields with 90 employees (over 50 of these employees are technical staff).
